Pact, by R.S. Thomas

This is my child;
that is yours. Let
peace be between them
when they grow up.

They are far off
now; let it not
be through war they are brought
near. Their languages

are different. Let them both
learn it is peace
in the hand is the translation
of peace in the mind.

  1. Bryn Jones Says:

    This poem is not in the Collected Poems, 1945-1990 of R. S. Thomas that I’ve got. I have seen it before somewhere, however.

      It appears in Uncollected Poems, by RS Thomas, edited by Tony Brown and Jason Walford Davies, Bloodaxe, 192 pp, £9.95, ISBN: 978-1852248963. This contains about 150 poems that had previously appeared in magazines and newspapers rather than the poet’s own books.

  2. Anton Garrett Says:

    Always glad to read RS Thomas’ poetry.
