New Year’s Eve Post

Well, this year has been rounded off nicely with a win in the Everyman Crossword Competition:

In due course I’ll be distributing largesse in the form of a new set of dictionaries like these..

Other than that, it’s chucking it down here in Cardiff so the rest of New Year’s Eve will involve me staying in, drinking a cocktail or two, eating steak and chips with a nice bottle of Amarone, and doing today’s  Azed puzzle.

Let me just take this opportunity to wish you all out there a happy, peaceful, and prosperous 2018!

  1. You must have a good data set to estimate the typical number of correct entries to these contests. What fraction of your correct entries end up being winners?

I do the Everyman puzzle every Sunday and win prizes 2-3 times per year, so about 1 in 20 are winners. There are 5 winners each week.

  2. I like to think of NY eve as the last day of the year. No need to go out. Plus I have just discovered that In the Line of Duty is on netflix. wow.

  3. Isn’t a dictionary the last thing a good crossword solver needs? Seems like giving Sir Edmund Hillary an ice axe as a reward from climbing Mount Everest. 🙂

Fun facts: the family name was originally pronounced eve-rest (such as Adam might have said after a tiring day in the garden); back when the official height was 29,002 feet, the actual measurement was 29,000, but it was felt that that would seem like just an estimate.
