Watch “Why the Universe is quite disappointing really – Episode 1” on YouTube

Episode 1, in which I explain why stars are not very good at generating power and that a couch potato radiates more energy per kilogram than the Sun.

  1. Phillip Helbig Says:

It’s not the source of all energy on Earth. Geothermal energy, for example, doesn’t come from the Sun, neither does nuclear power. (To some extent, geothermal energy is due to radioactivity generating heat.)

    • telescoper Says:

Geothermal energy does indirectly come from the Sun as the Earth was formed from the Solar Nebula. Likewise nuclear energy.

  2. Phillip Helbig Says:

You need to do an astronomy lookalikes featuring yourself and Martin Rees, but focussing on just the hands. 🙂

  3. Peter G Says:

I remember being very surprised when I first realised that a human’s energy output per kg was three orders of magnitude greater than that of our sun. But my take home message was that this shows how large the sun is. Imagine the luminosity of 10^30 kg of humanity!
